PURPOSE
This course provides the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) required classroom training and firearm qualification students need to obtain a Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL).
COURSE OBJECTIVE
To train and qualify students for submission to the Texas Concealed Handgun License qualification. Upon completion, students will have the following materials required to submit their application:
- Instruction certification for completed classroom curriculum and firearms shooting proficiency test.
- TxDPS CHL Packet
INSTRUCTOR
Ed Sanchez is a concealed handgun licensing instructor in the State of Texas and has several years of experience training others in the proper safety and use of firearms. The CHL professionally developed curriculum uses multiple training techniques and aides to help students learn the material and retain the content.
COURSE PREREQUISITE
- Basic proficiency with a handgun
CHL and CHL Renewal courses are not intended to train students how to shoot a firearm. The firearms shooting proficiency test of the course is required by the State of Texas to demonstrate your ability to safely and properly handle and shoot a handgun.
COURSE DURATION
- Required 10 hours (minimum) of combined classroom instructions and firearms shooting proficiency test.

$125.00 course fee ($80.00 for renewal) Cash or Check are accepted. (This fee does not include the $140.00 Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) non-refundable application/license fee)
MANDATORY RANGE EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO QUALIFY
Come range-ready with:
- Semi-automatic handgun or a revolver ** of at least .32 caliber in good repair and have no modifications that will make the handgun less safe. (unloaded and in a case) STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO BRING HANDGUN OR AMMUNITION INTO CLASSROOM. BRING ONLY THE FIREARM YOU PLAN TO QUALIFY WITH PLUS ONE MAGAZINE.
- Baseball Cap
- Safety Glasses Can Be Provided
- Ear Protection / Eye Protection Can Be Provided
- Footwear that covers both entire feet
- One box of 50 round ammunition specific to the handgun that will be used for qualifying
NO RELOADED HAND-LOADED or SURPLUS AMMUNITION ALLOWED. Use commercial ammunition only.
** Qualifying with a revolver will not allow you to carry a semi-auto. It is highly recommended you qualify with a semi-auto so you may choose to carry either a semi-auto or revolver.
Range Proficiency Test Requirements (as dictated by the TxDPS)
- Total of 50 rounds fired at a B-27 target (45″ high x 24″ wide)
- Score of 175 out of 250 possible points (70 percentile) required to pass
- Shooting stance from the ready position where firearm is already in a position to fire

3 yard line – 20 shots:
1 shot in 2 seconds, 5 times
2 shots in 3 seconds, 5 times
5 shots in 10 seconds, once
7 yard line – 20 shots:
5 shots in 10 seconds, once
1 shot in 3 seconds, 5 times
2 shots in 4 seconds, once
3 shots in 6 seconds, once
5 shots in 15 seconds, once
15 yard line – 10 shots:
2 shots in 6 seconds, once
3 shots in 9 seconds, once
5 shots in 15 seconds, once
Scoring
8,9,10 and X rings = 5 Points
7 ring = 4 Points
On target, Outside rings = 3 Points
PASSING SCORE = 175/250
